Of course, one of the key questions when buying an MTU diesel engine is: do you go for a second-hand engine or a brand new unit? Hahebo helps you find the right answer.
This blog gives you information you will find useful when deciding whether to buy a new or used MTU engine. Which of the two options is best for you?
BUDGET USED MTU ENGINE
It goes without saying that your budget is all-important when you buy an MTU engine. If your scope of investment is limited, then buying a new MTU diesel engine is probably not a realistic option. This means a second-hand unit is obviously the way to go. Of course it is also important that – if you have a limited budget – you not only look at the price, but also weigh that against the specifications of the engine concerned. You need to check the number of operating hours in particular. If an engine is being sold very cheaply but has also run for a nigh number of hours, then an engine that seemed cheap will often end up costing you dearly in the long run!
INTENDED USE OF THE MTU ENGINE
The second-hand MTU engines of Hahebo were built between 1969 and 1989, a period in which emissions and the environment were not such high priorities. It is therefore important that you are aware of the environmental requirements you need to comply with. If you're planning to use the engine for a (relatively) new boat, for instance, you must of course limit the emissions of pollutant substances as much as possible. A new MTU engine may then be a better option, and more economic in use to boot. If the MTU engine is to be used for dredging operations in the Middle East, for instance, then emissions are less of an issue and an older, second-hand engine is an ideal and cheap solution, especially given how low oil prices are in those countries.
SIZE AND APPEARANCE OF THE ENGINE
New MTU engines are usually somewhat smaller and more efficient than older versions. This should be taken into account when choosing between new or used. Of course, brand new engines also look more appealing. If you need an engine for a new or nearly new boat, then an older engine doesn’t ‘fit’ quite so well. For powering sand dredgers, for instance, or for use as a power generator, the appearance of the engine is usually less important and a second-hand MTU engine is a great option. A second-hand unit also suits somewhat older boats very well. Is the MTU engine visible? Then you can give the outer surface a new coat by painting it in such a way that the engine's appearance perfectly reflects your house style.
DELIVERY TIMES OF AN MTU ENGINE
Hahebo second-hand MTU engines are supplied direct from stock and that means very short delivery times – it's just a question of arranging the proper export papers. In most cases, new MTU engines are subject to longer deliver times, as the engines are not directly available or have yet to be manufactured. Do you need an MTU engine in short order? Then second-hand is the best option.
