Want to buy a second-hand MTU diesel engine? Then you naturally want to be sure you're making a sound investment. And that means you want to have a clear idea of the things to look for at purchase. Hahebo is happy to help you with this check-list.
What should I look for when buying an MTU engine? We explain the three most important things to consider below:
1. CHECK THE MTU ENGINE'S REGISTERED OPERATING HOURS
If you are looking on the internet for a competitively priced MTU engine, then you are comparing apples and pears. You will come across a wide range of prices. Is a more expensive second-hand engine not interesting then? No, that doesn’t have to be the case at all. One thing to check thoroughly is the amount of operating hours registered on the MTU engine's counter. If the engine has already operated for thousands of hours, the price should be relatively low. So you should certainly bear in mind how many hours you're planning to use the engine. If you are going to run it for many hours, then a low number of operating hours is essential, which then directly justifies the higher purchase cost. But if your engine will only run occasionally, then a higher number of operating hours at purchase is not a problem and your investment is lower.
2. EXPORT OPTIONS
To export an MTU engine from the Netherlands, you require an export permit. This permit is only granted if the country to which the engine is going is not on the Dutch government's so-called ‘forbidden countries list’. Put simply, there should not be any trade barriers. In practice, MTU engines are exported to many countries in South-East Europe, North Africa and the Middle East. Oil prices are lower there, which means an MTU diesel engine can be used relatively cheaply. Read more about how to export an MTU engine to another country.
3. DON'T FORGET: THE WEIGHT OF AN MTU ENGINE
An MTU engine weighs roughly 1,550 kilos, making it a robust, heavy engine that is not suited to every application. So you need to know whether or not weight is an issue for the application you have in mind.
Furthermore, weight affects transport costs. Some 26 tonnes may be loaded into a standard truck, which means a maximum of 16 MTU engines can be transported.
